PSST! Features
Julia Grigorian came from icy Russia, Kirby McClure came from sunny Florida, they met in an air-conditioned art school, where in 2006 they formed Radical Friend. Since then, the duo has shared a bed and directed music videos for bands like Of Montreal, The Postmarks, Mixel Pixel and Electric President. Their music videos and short films have appeared on MTV2, the RES DVD and on home computer screens everywhere! RES magazine profiled them as one of the “top 10 students to watch” in 2006. Radical Friend is currently working on two new music videos, and finishing college!

Q&A

PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently?
Being the first in the group we had the opportunity to start the story, so it was really interesting to see our storybook-like idea turned into a sinister mind trip, and then fall into a Yan Svankmajer-like animation world.

PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance – because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work?
Radical Friend is just the two of us, so we are usually in control of every aspect of a project. However, for the PSST! project it was interesting to see the piece take on a life of its own.

Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance?
It would be really cool to collaborate with some of the 60’s experimental Russian animators, like Yuriy Norshteyn or Ivan Ivanov-Vano. Those guys have made some of the most amazing work, mostly based on old Russian folk tales!

PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work?
We approached the PSST! project similarly to the way we approach all of our projects, the two of us concepting, shooting, directing and animating!

What keeps you motivated from project to project?
We take spontaneous road trips between projects, watch weird films and old commercials, and look at a lot of bad music videos on YouTube.

What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up?
We are currently in production of a music video for The Favourite Sons (Vice Records) it will have a totally different feel than our other work, we are pretty excited about that! We are also writing some fun treatments for a few other videos right now.
