| Demo was founded by designer Justin Fines in 1997. Born out of the love of his hometown of Detroit and it's music, Demo began by churning out flyers and ephemera for the then thriving Detroit electronic music scene. Nine years, three cities, and countless projects later, Fines has found a home for Demo in New York City. In his work, the golden tint of suburban childhood nostalgia blends with the influence of the hulking abandoned factories and mansions of the Motor City. This combination creates a graphic language that balances between hope and cynicism. Fines' work has been featured in publications worldwide, and recent projects include a toy for Superdeux & RedMagic [Hong Kong], a artist series board for Zoo York, and a series of designs for the Truth Campaign. Q&A PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently? I don't get a chance to animate things myself too often, and to be honest, I try to stay away from AfterEffects if I can! I would much prefer to be just a good designer than a mediocre animator. There are lots of fantastic animators out there and I love working with them. That said, I had an idea of how to make the piece in a fairly simple manner, and I'm glad it worked out. I cringe a little seeing the piece next to some of the other fancy PSST entries, though. If I had the chance to do it again, I would use more glitter. PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work? It was really no big deal, I was hoping those guys might make big house and egg suits and battle one another, but my hopes were in vain. Next time, Chad, next time. Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance? ![]() PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work? DEMO really keeps me down. I'm so glad to get a chance to express myself. My boss is an asshole. What keeps you motivated from project to project? +![]() What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up? Right now I'm struggling to train our studio cat, Rambo, not to rip up my boxes. It's hard work, but rewarding. demo-design.com radmountain.com Justin worked on MAISON NACHOS FLIGHT |
