| Hoon Chong is the Creative Director/ Designer/ Animator at Freestyle Collective based in New York City. He's been drawing on walls behind televisions since he was three years old. He doodles ideas and characters in his little black sketch book on the subway which is where he draws most of his inspiration from. All those ideas funnel into beautiful little stories set into divine motion. Q&A PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently? To entrust another completely with something that you hold dear to your heart is not an easy task. But the anticipation of what was to come next was really thrilling and exciting. Knowing that these parts were going to create a completed narrative, knowing that the team members were well respected, super talented individuals, and knowing that the character I created was going to be in safe designers' hands, allowed me to open my mind. This project in particular has allowed me to do more soul searching and allowed me to be more exploratory with my personal work. PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work? I never saw it as losing control over my work because ultimately it was to become our work as a team. There is a matter of trust amongst the team members. Knowing that your work was in good talented hands made me want to see the work in progress even more- to see where the character was going to be lead or how it was going to change. No matter where the story ended up or how the character had evolved over the course of the minute, there was never any worry or concern that it would end up boring or mundane. Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance? I would pass it off to Pablo Picasso then to Salvador Dali for their cutting edge creativity and their ability to transcend reality. PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work? Most of the time credit is not given where credit is due in our line of work. Our work is created not by one but by many. Our work is given birth by many minds coming together and many hands forging ideas to come to fruition. Behind the scenes on any project, there are alot of hands participating, molding, creating and moving. My belief is that they all deserve the respect and due credit of participation as any other lead on a team or company name. What keeps you motivated from project to project? Love. Love for design. Love for animation. Love for stories.. What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up? Vacation... I hope....keeping my fingers crossed. freestylecollective.com Hoon worked on LOQUACIOUS EYSICLE WILDBITES |
