Q&A

PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently?
To me this project wasn't really about my work, It was about collaborating with people I have a lot of respect for and exploring what we can come up with. Getting a chance to work with Saiman, Genn and Chad again was very exciting. I worked with Saiman back in the days when i was still at the BNS LA office, and worked with Chad at BNS NY and Genn freelanced at BNS NY. Our goal was to do something we haven't really done personally and something that was gonna be fun to make. Although we've all worked with miniatures in the past, this is the first time we've done something with marionettes. I'm now working with a directing collective (Inner Circle Collective) and I felt like what we came up with would be different from what we would come up with at ICC. We do more live action at ICC and I haven't done anything with miniatures in over a year, so our marionette pice was a lot of fun.

PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance – because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work?
I never really thought about it, everyone involved in this project is very talented. So there wasn't any fear of losing "control".

Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance?
I think my brother Ben, he's at BNS LA, we worked in the same place for a long time but never really worked on a project together. So this would be somewhat close to working on a project together. I really like the work he's been doing.

PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work?
Personally it's very refreshing, and it helps me keep my sanity. Commercial work is a bit of a grind sometimes.

What keeps you motivated from project to project?
Making the process fun.

What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up?
We have couple of projects working on now at ICC, which finishes around the end of April. Then I'm gonna take some time off and relax for a while.
We just finished a spot that we shot for Citibank that is airing now. It was for identity monitor where the photos of the people in the driver's license, passport, credit card etc. were talking about their experiences.
We also just finished a promo we did for the CMT Music awards, that just started airing this week. This one had a giant belt buckle drop in the middle of Broadway in Nashville. We had a chance to travel down to Nashville, I've never been there before and i must say I had a great time down there. It was also very exciting to shoot on location and shut down the street for a whole day.
