PSST! Features
As a kid, Brian Gossett drew his He-Man figures rather than playing with them. Soon he began putting muscles on everything he drew, from manatees to ice cream. Today, Brian lives in Los Angeles pursuing his dream of starring in the sequel to the Shogun Assassin. Oh and before I forget, he is also a pretty decent designer/art director too. Brian received his BFA at the University of Houston in 2001 graduating with honors. Since then he has been involved in a wide variety of projects over the years, big and small. Brian has worked with studios such as Exopolis, Logan, Star Dust and Buck. Some of the projects he has recently worked on are the new iPod “Party” commercials as well as the welcoming animation to the new AppleTV product and the opening credits to the 2007 IFC Independent Spirit Awards Show. To this day he still puts muscle into his work, figuratively not literally.

Q&A

PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently?
I have always believed in that mantra. Stephen and I were looking for a great project for us to collaborate on and when I was asked to contribute to Psst! I immediately contacted Stephen and we were instantly stoked. With the next addition of my good friend David and then Juicy later in the game I knew it was in good hands. As far as how I look at my own work, I almost always like collaborating with other artists. I am constantly humbled and amazed how much talent I am surrounded by. It’s a privilege to just be included amongst these people.

PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance – because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work?
I loved it, I didn’t once feel that we didn’t have control over it. As soon as I saw where the first 2 guys were taking it I immediately got giddy knowing that I can finally do that Zombie flick I have always wanted to do. When I pitched that idea to David and Stephen they quickly jumped on board the Zombie train and the rest is history.

Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance?
Boris Vallejo. I would love to see his amazing fantasy art come to life.

PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work?
Well, some studios like BNS are starting to come around and actually credit every artist involved. I would really like to see more of that because there are just so many creatives usually involved in what you end up with. I mean have you ever seen a movie that lists only the production company?

What keeps you motivated from project to project?
I love what I do and it’s as simple as that.

What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up?
I have a new series of snowboards coming out later this year through Rome Snowboards, I am designing a limited edition t-shirt and socks for I-Manifest and my buddy Ken Macy, I’m contributing to the upcoming Grafuck book, and finishing up a few lingering personal projects. I am also getting married to my amazing fiance Ashley in July.
