Q&A

PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently?
"These videos make me want to try LSD"
- Mr. Anorexia

PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance – because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work?
"I think the biggest obstacle for people with their creativity is that they feel they have to sit down and create this finished, polished product. Especially nowadays, it's so easy to have a library of two thousand CDs, books and records. So many things. We're used to having all of these finished works of art in our life that seem to arise out of nothing. I think that so much of the creative process is a fragmentary one, and then it's about just allowing your intuition to put it together for you. It's funny how you create something and you think you're going in a million different directions, and then the thing you end up with is the thing that you wanted to create your whole life, but you're just as surprised by it as anybody else."
- Jeff Mangum.

Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance?
Norman McLaren

PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work?
"I don't know, it's-- I have no insight into what people are gonna do. I guess for advice, not to be Alcoholics Anonymous about this, but just try to make one song at a time. Try to make the songs actually really good."
- James Murphy

What keeps you motivated from project to project?
"An artist has got to be careful never really to arrive at a place where he thinks he's at somewhere. You always have to realize that you're constantly in a state of becoming, you know... and as long as you can stay in that realm you'll sort of be alright."
- Bob Dylan

What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up?
"You know, you heard some rumors out here that, uh, Venom have packed in - yes? Venom are supposed to have finished. WELL WE'RE RECORDING A FUCKING NEW ALBUM NOW. And it's a little bit different, to say the least."
- Conrad "Cronos" Lant
