| James is a motion graphics designer and illustrator working in central London for motiong graphics outfit, Mainframe. he's had the great pleasure of working with the likes of MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Nike, BBC, Computer Arts, and along side lovely people like Tado, Si Scott, Sherbet Animation! Q&A PSST! uses a collaborative process that is based on the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. How has participating in this project made you look at your own work differently? A little bit yes, it's always interesting to see how somebody else would have interpreted the same idea. When working I keep stopping and thinking "Wonder how *insert name* would of done this?".. PSST! is a project in which the outcome is also left up to a certain amount of chance because the whole process is detemined by the successive artist's reactions to the previous work. How do you feel about losing some of the "control" over your final work? When I came to this project I was prepared to lose control of whatever I had created. I love to see how other people take on and evolve my ideas into something that's a completely new beast! Who would you "Pass it on..." to if you had a chance? Too many to name, pretty much everyone on the roster! The studios I respect such as Psyop, loyalkasper, Shynola, Wyld Stallyons, and of course Chris from Dstrukt as he's just over the road from me! And all the super people here at Mainframe of course :) PSST! is also intended to showcase the personal work of designers and artists that generally work in relative anonymity or within a studio system in which credit is applied to a company rather than individual artists. How do you view this in relation to your client-driven work? I see it as a chance to really push myself both mentally and technically. With client work, a lot of the time you need to please a number of people, with this I've only myself to please!! What keeps you motivated from project to project? Opportunities to shine! What's next for you? Any cool projects coming up? Lots of cool stuff I can't talk about! I'm also planning on doing an animation short this year, so you've not seen the last of me (*evil laugh*). mutanthands.com mainframe.co.uk James worked on UNRECIPROCATED SURGERY ZOMBIE!!! |
